I was given a pot of a kind rose plant on Valentine's Day. At that time, there were only two mature roses in bloom.

Being a closeted plant lover, I cared for it like it was a pet, although I certainly have no green thumb. (I don't even know what to call it. Rose bush?) I placed it in the cool shade of the balcony of my dorm room, and sprinkled it twice a day, morning and evening. If I had forgotten to water it, a terrible feeling would come over me. That same feeling returned when I pruned it.

About two weeks later, the bright red hues of the rose petals faded into dull shades of brown, and the roses wilted into a limp, dry mass on their stems. Not knowing anything about roses, I assumed that the next blooms would appear in a few months or so.

However, two days ago, a new bud bloomed into a small red rose one morning. As I looked at it, tears began to well up in my eyes. The fresh, little rose was the most beautiful thing I had ever set my eyes on. In a way, it was as if the plant was thanking me for all I've done for it thus far.

Another little bud just recently appeared. I hope it will bloom soon.

I love the plant more than ever now.
